Chiefly correspondence, 1761-1787, of Dr. Theodorick Bland (1742- 1790) of "Farmingdell," Prince George County, Va., while studying medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland; commanding the Virginia Militia 1st Regiment, Light Dragoons, guarding captured British soldiers in Albemarle County, Va.; and while serving in the Continental Congress. Subjects include medical education and practices (including the treatment of slaves), Revolutionary War military actions, and French aid to the American cause. Also included are are copies and extracts of letters to or by Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and others. Also included is correspondence, 1739-1783, and legal and estate papers of Theodorick Bland (1708-1784) of "Cawsons," Prince George County, and "Springfield, " Amelia County, Va., including letters of Dr. Theodorick Bland discussing the British occupation of Portsmouth, Va., in 1781. Also present is an account book, 1766-1769, of Theodorick Munford (1742-1772), a Prince George County merchant.
